About Us

UCH Surgery is one of the tertiary referral surgical centres in Hong Kong, offering comprehensive and high-quality clinical services to the 1.1 million population of Kowloon East Cluster, especially the Kwun Tong District. With 212 surgical beds, we perform over 1500 elective and 400 emergency major operations annually.

As pioneers in minimally invasive surgery, we have been utilizing laparoscopic technique since the mid-1990s, which has now become standard practice for our majority operations. In our commitment to staying at the forefront of surgical advancements, we continually introduce cutting-edge techniques such as Robotic Surgery, Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision, Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection, Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy, Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Free Flap Head and Neck Reconstruction, and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate, catering to the diverse surgical needs of our patients.

Our services are organised based on subspecialties, and we are an accredited training centre of The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in General Surgery, Urology, and Subspecialties of Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery, Breast Surgery, Head & Neck Surgery, and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Our dedicated team of surgical nurses plays a vital role in patient care, including piloting nurse specialist-led clinic services and taking on key coordinating roles in initiatives of cancer case manager program and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program.

At UCH Surgery, we place great emphasis on academic research, boasting numerous publications and collaborating on multiple trials with universities and international research centres. Dr Samuel Kwok Medals for Outstanding Achievement in Academic Surgery has been established since 2017 to promote academic excellence at UCH. Moreover, we proudly serve as a teaching hospital for clinical year medical students from the two medical schools of Hong Kong.

As a recognition of our achievement, we have received several Outstanding Team Awards and Young Achiever Awards from Kowloon East Cluster and Hospital Authority.

Team A / Colorectal Surgery (CRS)

Starting to adopt laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery since 1990s, UCH Surgery has established laparoscopic colectomy and proctectomy as the routine surgical treatment for invasive colorectal cancers, to achieve curative radical resection of bowel tumor and regional lymph nodes.
One of the pioneering centres in Hong Kong to introduce Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (TaTME) since 2016, for sphincter preserving radical resection of low lying rectal cancer.

Team B / Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery (HBP)

Perform an extensive variety of HBP operating procedures for benign and malignant diseases, from anatomical hepatectomies, parenchymal augmentation-assisted liver surgery, local ablative procedures for liver tumors, different types of pancreatectomies to procedures related to biliary tree, using both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

Adopt multidisciplinary approach with gastroenterologist, oncologist and radiologist to provide patient-centred management strategy in difficult cases for both benign and malignant HBP diseases, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) which is common in our locality.

Advanced endoscopic procedures including SpyGlass cholangioscopy for better visualization of ductal mucosa with biopsy taken for tissue diagnosis; laser or electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) for stone fragmentation procedures; endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) services for assessment of biliary tree and pancreas, and therapeutic EUS guided biliary drainage such as hepaticogastrostomy (HCG) and EUS guided drainage of pseudocyst.
Smart liver resection with the 3D Synapse Simulation System which is the first simulation system installed in Hong Kong in 2019 for preoperative precise anatomical assessment to facilitate precise and safe liver operation.

Started Robotic surgery programme in November 2022 through cluster-based robotic system being installed at Tseung Kwan O Hospital. Different procedures including robotic liver resection, distal pancreatectomy and exploration of bile duct have been performed with excellent results. Will continue to explore the application of this technology in complex HBP surgery, so that our patients will enjoy the benefit of minimally invasive robotic surgery.

Team C / Breast Surgery (BRS)

The Kowloon East Cluster Breast Centre (KECBC), the first government funded Breast Centre, was set up in 2008. It comprises of a multidisciplinary team and provides comprehensive patient-centred care to patients suffering from breast cancer and breast diseases. Its model was showcased as the flagship model in HA Cancer Strategic Service Framework in 2019.

The First One-Stop Breast Service in Hong Kong – with the use of a validated triage system and with our dedicated radiologists and pathologists, patients with suspicious breast cancer will receive a fast track one-stop diagnostic service.

The First One-Stop Combined Breast Clinic in Hong Kong emphasizes multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach and personalized therapy. With our oncologists and MDT team, patients can undergo personalized assessment, detailed consultations, shared treatment decision, psychosocial support and survivors’ sharing all in one visit.

Pioneered Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Hong Kong since 2009, which has become popularized in Hong Kong. It enables breast-conserving surgery and nipple-preserving surgery to more breast cancer patients who wish to preserve their breast and/or nipple.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Provides advanced breast surgeries including sentinel lymph node biopsy, endoscopic breast surgery, post-neoadjuvant breast surgery with modern localization technique and various breast reconstruction surgeries. This facilitates surgery for difficult and challenging breast cancer patients while also enabling superior patient outcome and helping to rebuild body image and quality of life for patients.

Provides minimally invasive breast surgery including percutaneous vacuum-assisted breast surgery, ablative breast surgery and endoscopic breast surgery for various breast diseases and selected breast cancer patients.

Minimal Invasive Breast Surgery
Pioneers in Breast Cancer Nursing Program, Community Nursing Care Program, Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Program, Onsite Psychological Support Program and Breast Cancer Survivors Support Program since 90s in Hong Kong. It allows same day surgery, quality care and facilitate speedy recovery from breast cancer surgery.

Early Discharge Program
Experienced Breast Nurse Consultant, Cancer Care Manager and Nurse specialists run the nurse-led clinic which provides perioperative counselling and education, bra-fitting, lympedmea care and long term surveillance and support. Pioneered the one-stop mastalgia clinic for patients with refractory breast pain. Additionally, we are one of the nursing training centres for Post-Registration Certificate Course (PRCC) in Advanced Surgical Nursing and Breast Care Nursing.

Minimally Invasive H&N surgeries coupled with minimally invasive anaesthesia by local anesthesia (LA), including LA thyroidectomy, LA parathyroidectomy, LA submandibular sialoadenectomy & LA parotidectomy. Most patients can be discharged home on the same day and alleviates ward crowdedness.
Ultra-minimally invasive operations including radiofrequency ablation of benign thyroid nodules to reduce the wound pain with a tiny puncture wound, and intralesional cryotherapy for refractory keloid.

Team D/ Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (UGI)

Provide minimally invasive surgeries including video assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) esophagectomy with extended lymphadenectomy for esophageal cancer patients, laparoscopic radical gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy for gastric cancer patients, robotic assisted surgery in selected patients, and laparoscopic endoscopic collaborative surgery for various foregut tumor.

Provide advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early foregut neoplasia, per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia, endoscopic full thickness resection (EFTR) or submucosal tunnel endoscopic resection (STER) for submucosal tumor.

Designated metabolic and bariatric surgical centre in Hospital Authority, with dedicated multi-disciplinary bariatric team conducting regular meetings to discuss treatment plans tailored to individual morbidly obese patients with various co-morbidities.

Well-equipped laboratory with full panel of functional tests including pH study, impedance study, high resolution esophageal manometry, and Endo-Flip study for Gastro-esophageal reflux disease and other functional diseases.

Team U/ Urology

Working closely with TKOH Urology Team as Kowloon East Cluster Urology Team, providing comprehensive and high quality care for adult patients with urological diseases, ranging from non-surgical treatment, minimal invasive surgery, robotic surgery to complex open surgery.
Muilti-disciplinary team clinics, including joint renal-urology clinic, pelvic care surgical clinic (with urogynecologists and colorectal surgeons), and combined urology-oncology clinic to provide personalized treatment planning.
Experienced Urology nurse specialists run the nurse-led clinic and provide initial assessment for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), pre and post-treatment counselling of wide spectrum of diseases.
Pioneered the use of Ultrasound with Navigation System Under Magnetic Field for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Hong Kong in 2014. This technique becomes popularized among other Hospital Authority hospitals nowadays.
Acquired the first high power 120W Holmium Laser System in Hong Kong in 2018 and re-introduced Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) as the surgical management for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Cluster-based Andrology Clinic was set up at TKOH in 2019, with sex therapists and Urology nurse specialists to provide comprehensive management for patients with sexual dysfunction.
Re-introduction of pubovaginal sling by autologous fascia in the management of female stress urinary incontinence in 2019.
Leading the development of cluster-based robotic surgical service with the installation of robotic system at TKOH in 2022 and acquired the first operating table with Integrated Table Motion function to synchronize with robotic arms in Hong Kong.
